Job Summary
Langan is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join its collaborative team in Parsippany, NJ. This individual will serve a key function in providing the planning and execution of field investigations, monitoring foundation and earthwork construction, identifying and implementing field and lab work solutions, and preparing logs and reports. In this role, you will have the opportunity to analyze geotechnical engineering problems, and assist in preparation of geotechnical engineering reports on large-scale and high-profile projects.
Job Responsibilities
- Assist with the planning and execution of field investigations, including logging borings and test pits, collecting samples, performing field tests, and collecting and recording data;
- Observe foundation and earthwork construction activities; monitors conformance with the construction documents;
- Use firm’s field testing equipment as part of construction and earthwork monitoring, including using a nuclear gauge;
- Identify and implement solutions to both routine and complex field and/or laboratory problems;
- Prepare standard logs and field forms, including drilling and test pit logs, field investigation dailies, and chain of custody logs;
- Ability to review and understand plans, specifications, and reports;
- Conduct file reviews, site reconnaissance, and document searches;
- Accurately document and communicate with supervisor on any problems encountered on project sites;
- Assists in geotechnical modeling and analysis;
- Assists in the preparation of geotechnical reports, plans, and technical specifications;
- Training and mentoring less experienced staff engineers;
- Attends meetings with clients, contractors, and other Project Team members;
- Interacts with other Langan disciplines on multi-discipline projects; and
- Perform other duties as requested.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering required; Master’s degree with Geotechnical specialty or desire to pursue is preferred;
- 2-4 years of work-related experience;
- Minimum GPA of 3.0;
- EIT Certification, or current registration for FE exam;
- 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification a plus;
- Desired field oversight/inspection experience in the following: earthwork, driven and drilled piles, pile load testing, footing and slab subgrade preparation, utility installation and backfilling, and excavation support;
- Office experience with investigation coordination and assisting in geotechnical report writing a plus;
- Experience with neighboring structure monitoring during construction a plus;
- Experience in assisting project manager with field work coordination and project management support a plus;
- Ability to travel to job sites in New Jersey and New York state;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical, multitasking, and judgment capabilities;
- Willingness to spend the majority of work hours in the field;
- Ability to effectively work independently and in a team environment; and
- Possess reliable transportation for client meetings and job site visits and a valid driver’s license in good standing.

Certain US jurisdictions require Langan to include an estimate of salary or hourly ranges. The estimated range for this role is: $68,000 - $88,500. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as related work experience, location, market conditions, education/training, certifications and other credentials, as well as applicable knowledge and skills. Certain roles may be eligible for overtime and participation in the firm's annual bonus and performance review program. Bonuses are discretionary and based on individual job performance and the profitability of the firm. Employees are also eligible to receive up to 20 days of paid vacation time, 10 days of paid sick time and 10 paid holidays throughout the year. Eligibility and actual paid time off may vary based on local law and factors such as hours worked, related work experience and level.
