Job Summary

Langan is seeking a Senior Environmental Scientist to join its collaborative team in Chicago, IL. This individual will serve a key function in performing special status-species surveys, botanical surveys, nesting bird surveys, restoration monitoring, and biological construction monitoring throughout the Midwest. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work cross-collaboratively across our North American regions as part of a rapidly growing team with a strong project pipeline in land development and contaminated site remediation.

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Perform nesting bird surveys, biological resources and habitat suitability assessments, vegetation communities classification and mapping, plant and animal species inventories, special status plant and animal species surveys, small mammals and special status flora assessments, jurisdictional wetland delineations, resource constraints analyses, and tree surveys;
  • Develop permit application packages for ACOE, USFW, and local agencies;
  • Coordinate with field teams and project managers to implement permit conditions;
  • Travel to job sites in remote locations;
  • Work in construction environments where schedule, timeliness, and attention to detail are top priorities; and
  • Performs other duties as requested.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in biology, wildlife, botany, ecology, environmental science or a closely related field;
  • 3+ years of related biological experience working in Midwest region;
  • Experience with one or more local sensitive species is highly desirable;
  • Experience with environmental regulations including NEPA and ESA;
  • Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) or Wetland Professional In-Training (WPIT);
  • Experience working with federal and state protected species, and permitting through ACOE, USFW, and CODNR;
  • Experience using GPS units in the field with (use of Collector, Survey123), a plus;
  • Working knowledge of computers (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required; ArcGIS and statistical software a plus;
  • Ability to travel and work extended hours, and able to work outside for long periods of time;
  • Valid 40-hour HAZWOPER training certification is also desirable;
  • Possess a valid driver’s license in good standing; and
  • Local candidates preferred.

Certain US jurisdictions require Langan to include an estimate of salary or hourly ranges. The estimated range for this role is: $72,000 - $103,000. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as related work experience, location, market conditions, education/training, certifications and other credentials, as well as applicable knowledge and skills. Certain roles may be eligible for overtime and participation in the firm's annual bonus and performance review program. Bonuses are discretionary and based on individual job performance and the profitability of the firm. Employees are also eligible to receive up to 20 days of paid vacation time, 10 days of paid sick time and 10 paid holidays throughout the year. Eligibility and actual paid time off may vary based on local law and factors such as hours worked, related work experience and level.
